Celebrating a new graduating class of Carolina Nurses

Just before 7:30 pm on May 6th, 2022, undergraduate and graduate students from the UNC School of Nursing gathered in the breezeway at the Dean Smith Center, taking photos and preparing to take first or next steps in their promising careers as nurses, nurse educators and nurse researchers. As they filed down the long concrete stairs to take their seats, cheers from proud family members, friends and supporters echoed around the Dean Dome. Many of the 220 spring ’22 graduates completed the majority of their programs during the COVID-19 pandemic—persevering through remote learning, new clinical protocols and even working on the frontlines.

Interim dean Dr. Peggy Wilmoth presided over the celebration, noting that the ceremony was not only for our students, but the families, communities, faculty and school staff that supported their accomplishments.

“We know this occasion marks the culmination of a journey for you, too, as you have encouraged and supported your loved one as they gave us all, and more, than we asked of them….we applaud those who have shared their expertise and provided guidance and support.”

These dedicated and talented students join over 11,000 Carolina Nursing alumni across the world.

"More than ever we need nurses—service driven individuals—who have the desire to protect our nation's public health and to serve those in most in need."

Rear Admiral (RADM) Susan Orsega

We were very fortunate to have Rear Admiral (RADM) Susan Orsega present the keynote speech during the ceremony. RADM Orsega, Senior Advisor to the Assistant Secretary for Health and the U.S. Surgeon General, applauded our graduates for overcoming all obstacles on their way to join an indispensable profession, joining more that 3 million nurses nationwide: "More than ever we need nurses—service driven individuals—who have the desire to protect our nation's public health and to serve those in most in need."

In total, 220 Carolina Nursing students received a degree or certificate, including:

99 Bachelors of Science in nursing graduates
