In August 2021, Dr. Valerie Glassman, director of SON’s Clinical Support Division, was awarded the Glatthorn Dissertation of the Year by the Department of Educational Leadership at East Carolina University. The prize is named for the late Allan Glatthorn, who served at ECU in the College of Education from 1987 to 2003, when he retired. The award carries with it a $1000 gift and a certificate.
Glassman’s dissertation, the first higher education-focused dissertation to win this award in its 18 year history, explored the impacts of litigation stress, mass media, students’ attorneys, and federal legislation on student conduct administrators (the staff on campus who administer the disciplinary process). Using the lens of physicians’ medical malpractice stress syndrome, Glassman identified strong parallels between health care professionals and student conduct practitioners, as well as translatable ways to mitigate such stresses and reduce the effects of these outside forces.
Congratulations, Dr. Glassman
