Havens, as Chair, Kicks Off ANCC Magnet Conference

Interim Dean Donna Havens, PhD, RN, FAAN, is in Atlanta Georgia this week to fulfill her duties as Chair of the Commission on Magnet at the Annual ANCC Magnet Conference, October 7-9.

The Magnet Recognition Program® recognizes healthcare organizations for quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice. Globally, consumers rely on the Magnet designation of healthcare organizations as a credential for high quality nursing.

In 2010, Havens was selected by the ANA Board to serve as a member of the Magnet Commission which oversees and sets standards and policies for the Magnet Recognition program. In January 2015, she was elected Chair of the Commission.

Currently, 422 healthcare organizations worldwide hold Magnet recognition status: 415 in the U.S. and 7 international organizations.

“My research program on the organization of nursing in hospitals and outcomes led me to study Magnet hospitals for many years, so it is most exciting to serve on this commission,” Havens said. “Our own UNC Hospitals was recently recognized as a Magnet organization for the second time (hospitals must be reevaluated every 4 years). I look forward to celebrating with our UNC practice partners in Atlanta.”

Among her other duties for the 3-day conference, Havens will announce UNC Hospitals as a Magnet to an audience of more than 8,500 attendees. “YES,” she assures us. “I will be wearing Carolina Blue!”
