Jacobson Vann appointed to North Carolina Institute of Medicine

Julie Jacobson Vann, PhD, MS, RN, a clinical professor and the inaugural planetary health director at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing, has been selected as a member of the North Carolina Institute of Medicine.

The institute is a statewide, nonpartisan organization that brings together leaders across sectors to shape health policy and improve the well-being of North Carolinians. Jacobson Vann will join more than 150 leaders from health care, public health, research, education and policy in addressing statewide health challenges, including workforce development, healthy aging and system transformation.

“I am honored to join the North Carolina Institute of Medicine and look forward to contributing to its mission,” Jacobson Vann said.

Jacobson Vann has 48 years of experience in health services, including research and evaluation, academic teaching, health services and managed care administration, and public health and patient care. Her work focuses on health promotion, disease prevention, access to health services and planetary health.

At the School of Nursing, she teaches health care policy, health care finance, health economics and health services workforce management. Her recent work includes preparing nursing students to develop and lead green teams, advancing sustainability in nursing simulation labs and advocating for North Carolina legislation to prohibit intravenous bags and tubing containing certain phthalate plasticizers in health care delivery.

She also serves as co-principal investigator on a four-year Utforsk grant with colleagues at UNC-Chapel Hill and four campuses of Western Norway University of Applied Sciences. The project focuses on preparing nurses and other health professionals to lead and manage the health care workforce, promote population health and address health care sustainability.
