
Jennifer Leeman, DrPH, MPH, MDiv, has been appointed as the associate dean for research at the UNC School of Nursing, effective May 1, 2023. Dr. Leeman has held this position on an interim basis since August 1, 2022, and is an exemplary and highly valued member of the School of Nursing leadership team.
Dr. Leeman received her master of public health degree from Columbia University and her doctor of public health from UNC’s Gillings School of Global Public Health. She has been a faculty member at the UNC School of Nursing since 1998, and over the course of her remarkable career, Dr. Leeman has made significant advancements in the field of implementation science.
Her research focuses on the implementation of health promotion interventions with an emphasis on populations at greatest risk for health disparities. Dr. Leeman has led a number of CDC-funded studies and contributed her expertise as a co-investigator on many NIH and foundation-funded studies, including her currently funded projects Taking the Med-South Lifestyle Program to Scale and the Comprehensive Cancer Control Collaborative of North Carolina. As the implementation scientist on seven nurse-led studies, Dr. Leeman has developed and tested strategies to implement innovations in various health care settings with a focus on improving health outcomes for underserved populations. Dr. Leeman’s teaching, mentorship and expertise have been instrumental in building the next generation of nurse scientists’ capacity to conduct research and to incorporate implementation science into their intervention studies. As associate dean for research, she will provide leadership and guidance for all research activities at the School of Nursing, and she will undoubtedly continue to lead with excellence and inspire a culture of innovation and collaboration at Carolina Nursing.
