The UNC School of Nursing congratulates Jian (Lily) Chen, a third-year PhD student and Royster Fellow, for her outstanding leadership in securing multiple competitive grants as project director for UCA WAVES. These achievements reflect her commitment to addressing health disparities in North Carolina’s underserved communities, with a focus on AAPI and youth mental health initiatives.
Julian Grace Foundation Capacity-Building Grant
A $28,500 one-year grant will strengthen UCA WAVES’ capacity to expand peer support programs, develop youth initiatives under the WAVES Maker program, and enhance team leadership.
HealthLit4Wake Mini Grant
UCA WAVES received a six-month grant of $9,495 from Wake County Health and Human Services to promote health education in AAPI communities in the Research Triangle Park area. This is the third grant under Chen’s leadership, each incorporating research and evaluation in collaboration with multiple organizations.
Mental Health Block Grant
UCA WAVES secured a 30-month grant from the NC Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities, and Substance Use Services. Beginning January 2025, this funding will improve mental health services for underserved populations statewide, aligning with UCA WAVES’ strategic goals.
Blue Cross NC Foundation Youth Mental Health Grant Finalist
UCA WAVES was named a finalist for a three-year grant to advance youth mental and behavioral health, focusing on AAPI communities, military families, LGBTQ+ youth, and Karen refugees. The final decision will be announced on January 21, 2025.
Founded in 2016, UCA WAVES addresses the mental health challenges faced by AAPI youth, focusing on cultural gaps, stigma, and limited resources. Guided by its mission to raise awareness, build support, and promote culturally sensitive interventions, WAVES empowers families and communities through programs that emphasize Wellness, Advocacy, Voices, Education, and Support.
