Natalia Villegas Rodriguez  and Susana Barroso receive Booth Community Service and Outreach Award

Associate Professor Natalia Villegas Rodriguez, PhD, MSN, RN, IBCLC, FAAN, and Assistant Professor Susana Barroso, PhD, RN, have been named the 2023 recipients of the Bill and Mary Lou Booth Community Service and Outreach Award. The award recognizes their outstanding community service-learning initiative that aims to increase access to nursing education, research and care for underprivileged populations in North Carolina.

Their focus is on low-income and minority groups, such as Latinos and African Americans, providing preventive services like health screenings, glucose screenings, blood pressure monitoring, health education, and referrals.

Collaborating with UNC Student Health Action Coalition, El Centro Hispano, Health Window from the Mexican Consulate, CitygateDream Center, and other community partners, Natalia and Susana’s outreach activities will take place at various locations, aiming to improve access to care and reduce health disparities.

The Bill and Mary Lou Booth Community Service and Outreach Fund was established in 2016 to support faculty and students who wish to engage in community service to improve the health and welfare of North Carolinians. Natalia and Susana are the fifth recipients of the award, following Rhonda Lanning, DNP, CNM, LCCE, IBCLC, RN in 2022, Marianne Cockroft, PhD, RN in 2021, Jean Davison, DNP, RN, FNP-C in 2019 and Rebecca Kitzmiller, PhD, MHR, RN, BC in 2018.
