Peggy Wilmoth, PhD, MSS, RN, FAAN, has been named Co-Chair of the North Carolina Institute of Medicine’s (NCIOM) Task Force on Veterans’ Health. She will serve alongside Secretary Jocelyn Mitnaul Mallette and Paul Berry.

The Task Force will convene in summer 2025 to examine challenges facing North Carolina’s approximately 619,000 military Veterans—roughly 8% of the state’s population. As Veterans transition out of active duty and age, many encounter barriers in accessing and coordinating care across civilian and VA systems. Additional concerns include behavioral health, substance use treatment, housing, and employment.

The passage of the PACT Act in 2022 expanded eligibility for care, increasing demand on the existing system. In light of this and ongoing discussions around VA funding, the Task Force will focus on improving access, enhancing care coordination, and building a workforce capable of supporting Veterans’ health across their lifespans.

“I am honored to join leaders from across the state in this important work towards improving health outcomes for those who have volunteered to serve our nation and their families,” Wilmoth said.
