Saif Khairat, PhD, MPH, Professor and Beerstecher-Blackwell Distinguished Term Scholar at the UNC School of Nursing, chaired the 2024 Best Student Paper Competition at the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) Annual Symposium in San Francisco, held November 9–13.

The competition, a highlight of the symposium, included over 60 submissions from students representing various U.S. institutions. Eight expert judges from academia and industry evaluated the submissions. Following a rigorous review process, eight finalists were invited to present their work during a special session at the conference. The top three winners were selected after these presentations.

“Leading this year’s competition for the third consecutive year was an honor,” Dr. Khairat said. “The student papers presented a high level of critical thinking and rigor across various informatics topics, ranging from the application of AI to foundational computational methods in public and clinical settings.”
