Celebrating Dr. Diane Berry Research Day at Carolina Nursing with Undergraduate Research

Beginning this year, the Honors Posters presentation will be a part of Diane Berry Research Day. Diane Berry Research Day has been dedicated by the UNC School of Nursing and Sigma Theta Tau to honor Dr. Berry’s legacy of mentorship and teaching. Her inspiration and expertise has meant a great deal to our faculty and students, both past and present. These presentations represent the future of nursing research, carrying Dr. Berry’s influence for years to come.

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing and Alpha Alpha Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau: A Tribute to Diane Berry, Chair, Research Committee

In April 2019, Diane Berry was the keynote speaker for the first virtual induction ceremony for our school’s Alpha Alpha Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nurses. When she accepted the invitation, she said she wanted to show how her engagement in Sigma had guided her development as a nurse and as a researcher. She traced her history from helping found the chapter at Lenoir Rhyne University even before heading north for her graduate studies, to developing a grant team at the University of Tamaulipas in Tampico, Mexico with other active Sigma members, securing a grant together, and helping develop the research team there.

One of Diane’s proudest moments was her induction into Sigma’s International Research Hall of Fame in Calgary, Canada in 2019. For the past two years, Diane chaired the chapter’s Research Committee, during which time our chapter increased our annual grants program to $5000 per year, one of the highest chapter awards programs in all of Sigma. Diane spoke up that we allocate specific funds for Honors participants, graduate students, faculty and more recently, for clinicians because she believed so much in evidence based practice.

Recognizing this commitment, the Alpha Alpha Board voted to designate the annual Research Day celebrating our grant recipients and our Honor’s students, the annual Diane Berry Research Day as an enduring legacy of her service and dedication to advancing scholarship locally and globally.

Thank you, Diane, for the many ways you enriched our lives. Rest in Peace.
