SON in the News: Coping With Cancer Magazine and NC Health News

SON faculty recently appeared in articles for Coping with Cancer magazine and North Carolina Health News.

Kenan Distinguished Professor of Nursing Merle Mishel, PhD, RN, FAAN, and research professor Barbara Germino, PhD, RN, FAAN, authored an article called “Leaving Fear and Uncertainty Behind” for the September/October issue of Coping with Cancer magazine. Surviving cancer often means coping with the uncertainty that the cancer will reoccur. In the article, Drs. Mishel and Germino offer strategies survivors can use to manage uncertainty, including relaxation exercises, maintaining a gratitude diary, or practicing comforting self-talk. These exercises, they wrote, can make you “better equipped to manage your fear and uncertainty so you can focus on enjoying your best life after cancer.”

Clinical instructor Leslie Sharpe, FNP, MSN, RN, appeared in a North Carolina Health News article about her leadership at the Sylvan Community Health Center. The health center is part of a practice partnership formed by the SON, the Alamance-Burlington School System, and Piedmont Health. “It’s a great partnership, because the school is often the hub of a small rural community,” Ms. Sharpe told NC Health News.
