The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing proudly announces that Phillip Spangler has been named Staff Member of the Year (Hall of Famer) by the UNC Employee Forum. This award, presented at the Employee Forum Peer Recognition Awards, honors Phillip for his outstanding dedication and service to the School of Nursing and the broader university community.

The Staff Member of the Year (Hall of Famer) award recognizes individuals who exemplify the University’s core values of integrity, collaboration, respect, and high-level customer service. Nominees must have dedicated at least five years of service to the institution. Phillip Spangler’s contributions have clearly met and exceeded these criteria.

Phillip serves approximately 800 people at the School of Nursing, providing unparalleled support and demonstrating a remarkable commitment to the community. Notably, he facilitated the seamless transition of the entire School to swing space, ensuring that the students’ academic experiences remained uninterrupted in preparation for the Carrington construction project. Concurrently, he assisted the design team with construction documents and collaborated with vendors on an operational excellence project.

A key figure in maintaining the School’s operational functionality, Phillip has been instrumental in ensuring that the needs of all occupants are met, even in swing spaces. His dedication extends beyond facilities management, as he aids event planners, compliance officers, and colleagues in the School of Data Science and Society.

Phillip’s approach is marked by his humility, courteousness, and a methodical process: identifying needs, implementing solutions, and ensuring satisfaction. His creativity, resourcefulness, and flexibility enable him to handle pre-planned projects and emergencies with equal adeptness.

“Phillip Spangler is a hero to all those he serves at the School of Nursing and beyond,” remarked a colleague. “He truly embodies the University’s core values and is an exemplary nominee for the Hall of Famer award.”
