Xavier and Wang elected fellows of the American Academy of Nursing

The American Academy of Nursing has announced its selection of 250 highly distinguished nurse leaders for its 2022 class of Academy Fellows, including SON Assistant Professor Rose Mary Xavier, PhD, MS, RN, PMHNP-BC, and post-doctoral scholar Jing Wang, PhD, RN.

Dr. Xavier is a nurse scientist, psychiatric nurse practitioner, and director of the Biobehavioral Lab at the School of Nursing. She investigates the biological mechanisms of neuropsychiatric symptoms for clinical translation, as well as research methodology and analysis guided by the philosophy and principles of open science. Clinically, Dr. Xavier has a special interest in psychosis and the severely mentally ill population. She is a seasoned clinician with extensive experience working with the severely mentally ill and chemically dependent adult population in a variety of psychiatric care settings including involuntary and voluntary treatment facilities, large community hospitals, state mental health systems and outpatient psychiatry clinics.

Dr. Wang is currently pursuing a post-doctoral research fellowship in advancing the long-term care of older adults under the direction of Drs. Ruth Anderson and Anna Beeber. Dr. Wang is among the few emerging scholars who have been invited to join the fellowship of the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN). She has established an exceptional foundation for sustained and significant scholarly productivity in person-centered dementia care, an area of critical global need. As a researcher and principal investigator, Dr. Wang has received multiple highly competitive national and international research grants and fellowships to speak to the wellbeing and health equity of persons with dementia and their caregivers in multiple settings.

In the AAN press release, Kenneth R. White, PhD, RN, AGACNP, ACHPN, FACHE, FAAN, commended the impact these nursing leaders have on public health.

“As the American Academy of Nursing’s President, it gives me great pride to announce the largest class of Fellows since the organization began nearly 50 years ago. At a time when investments in, and policy to address, health equity, innovation, and access are paramount, the Academy is thrilled to welcome these dynamic and courageous nurse leaders who will support our collective vision of healthy lives for all people. Induction in the Academy is a powerful moment in a nurse’s career. When we gather this fall, to award the Fellowship credential, I look forward to celebrating each Fellow’s incredible accomplishments that have improved the wellbeing of communities across the globe.” – Kenneth R. White, PhD, RN, AGACNP, ACHPN, FACHE, FAAN

Selection criteria for fellowship includes evidence of significant contributions to nursing and health care, and sponsorship by two current Academy fellows. Applicants are reviewed by a panel comprised of elected and appointed fellows, and selection is based, in part, on the extent the nominee’s nursing career has influenced health policies and the health and wellbeing of all.

The inductees will be recognized for their significant contributions to health and health care at the Academy’s annual Health Policy Conference, taking place on October 27-29, 2022 in Washington, DC. This year’s conference theme is “From Reflection to Impact: Positioning Nursing’s Future.”
