Assistant Dean and Professor Linda Beeber, PhD, PMHCNS-BC, FAAN has been appointed to the US Department of Health and Human Services Interdepartmental Serious Mental Illness Coordinating Committee (ISMICC), which was established in March 2017 and reports to Congress and federal agencies on issues related to serious mental illness and serious emotional disturbance.
Beeber joins 13 other non-federal public committee members in comprising the ISMICC, as well as senior leaders from 10 federal agencies including HHS, and the Departments of Justice, Veterans Affairs, and Education, among others. The non-federal members represent mental health researchers and care providers, patients, families, and professionals who work with people living with serious mental illness.
The role of the committee is to provide Congress and federal agencies with information on advances made in research surrounding serious mental illness (SMI) and serious emotional disturbance (SED), evaluations of the efficacy of federal programs related to SMI, and recommendations for action.
Dr. Beeber’s three-year appointment begins now and was supported by the American Nurses Association, the American Academy of Nursing, and the American Psychiatric Nurses Association. The ISMICC will hold its inaugural meeting on August 31 in Washington, DC.
“I can think of no one more qualified to serve on this committee than Linda,” said Nena Peragallo Montano, dean of the School of Nursing. “We are thrilled to have her wealth of knowledge put to such good use on behalf of our country and its citizens who are affected by serious mental illness.”
