The Cancer Information & Population Health Resource (CIPHR) has selected Dr. Lorinda Coombs for their New Investigator Program. Dr. Coombs’ research proposal, ‘Metastatic Lung Cancer in North Carolina: Identifying clinical pathways leading to diagnosis using cancer registry and claims data from 2010-2018’ will use North Carolina cancer registry data linked with multi-payer claims to investigate patient outcomes.
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in both the United States (U.S.) and in North Carolina, where it was responsible for over 5,000 deaths in 2019. Survival rates for lung cancer vary based on stage at diagnosis, and, in North Carolina, at least 46% of people with lung cancer have metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis. Prior research on the effect of insurance on lung cancer outcomes suggests that mortality rates differ dependent upon insurance type and coverage, however, a state level analysis for this outcome has not yet been conducted for North Carolina.
