Coombs: Huntsman at Home, an Oncology Hospital at Home Program

New England Journal of Medicine Innovations in Care Delivery recently published an in depth article on a Nurse Practitioner (NP) led workforce that pioneered a new model of acute care delivery, in the home with NPs providing the intervention. UNC School of Nursing Assistant Professor, Dr. Lorinda A. Coombs was second author on the manuscript which focused on how the design and operationalizing of the care model and evaluated the benefit of the intervention, reduced acute care admissions, decreased length of stays and reduced Emergency Department visits.

Hospital at Home programs, already in use in the United Kingdom and Australia, have not been adapted in the United States to date, but show promise for rural populations, especially with the possibility of CMS reimbursement models.
