Associate Professor Saif Khairat, PhD, MPH, has been appointed the Beerstecher-Blackwell Distinguished Term Scholar, effective September 1, 2022.
The Beerstecher-Blackwell Distinguished Professorship Fund was endowed to memorialize Carol Ann Beerstecher-Blackwell, BSN ’71, a pediatric nurse and lecturer at the SON, and to recognize Carolina Nursing faculty whose accomplishments and career are determined by their colleagues to be highly significant to the discipline, the University and the School.
“His expertise and in-depth program of research make Dr. Khairat exceptionally worthy of this distinction. Thank you, Dr. Khairat, for all the work you do to make life better for the patients and families you work with and for enriching our School and the education of our students.”

Dr. Khairat has led national and international projects to enhance health care services and research, specifically within the field of informatics. With an R01 grant currently funded by the National Library of Medicine, Dr. Khairat and his team are investigating areas of information overload within electronic health records and testing how displaying patient data on a dashboard will affect ICU providers’ decision-making, efficiency, workload and fatigue.
