Shannon Smith joined the UNC School of Nursing as our new director of development on Monday, October 28. Shannon comes to us from Carolina’s University Development Office (UDO) where she has served as Associate Director of Development for Centers and Institutes.
In her role there, Shannon acted as the fundraising consultant and major gift officer for 19 pan-university centers and institutes. In her work, she supported the start-up or re-energizing of fundraising efforts at the American Indian Center, Carolina Women’s Center, Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History, Carolina Latinx Center, World View, Center for Galapagos Studies, Institute for Marine Science, Carolina Higher Education Opportunities Program, Partnerships in Aging Program, Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History, World View, and others.
Shannon closed FY19 at 216% of her individual fundraising goal for the Centers and Institutes, a testament to her energy and enthusiasm for raising support for Carolina, her alma mater. Indeed, her work has gotten her noticed: she was recently named one of 40 Under 40 advancement professionals in the U.S. by EverTrue, a leading advancement automation platform used by more than 300 institutes of higher education.
Prior to joining UDO, Shannon worked for Harnett Health as the director of foundation and marketing development. A Tar Heel tried and true, Shannon is a proud first-generation graduate of UNC, where she received her bachelor of arts degree in public policy in 2014.
We are thrilled to put her considerable talents to work for the good of the people and programs of Carolina Nursing!
