UNC School of Nursing celebrates faculty and staff with BSN Class of 2024 Recognition Awards

The UNC School of Nursing is proud to announce the recipients of the BSN Class of 2024 Recognition Awards, honoring faculty and staff members who have demonstrated exceptional dedication to Carolina Nursing excellence. These awards, nominated and selected by members of the BSN class, recognize individuals who have gone above and beyond in their commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment.

Faculty Excellence Award

Krystal Pendergraft-Horne, DNP, RN, FNP-C, Clinical Instructor, has been honored with the Faculty Excellence Award for her outstanding contributions to nursing education. Students commend her as a mentor, advisor, and educator whose expertise and passion have enriched their learning experience immeasurably. Krystal’s unwavering commitment to student success, coupled with her compassionate approach, has left a lasting impact on the development of future nurses.

“Krystal’s impact extends far beyond the classroom, as she dedicates herself to fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment for all students. Her ability to connect with her students on a personal level and tailor her guidance to individual needs is truly commendable. As I reflect on my journey through nursing school, I am filled with gratitude for Krystal’s unwavering dedication and support. She embodies the qualities of an exceptional educator and mentor, and I am honored to have had the privilege of learning from her. While I can attest to her guidance from my perspective, I can only imagine the profound impact she has on her peers and the future generation of Carolina nurses.”

 

Unsung Hero

Katella Silva, events and advancement services coordinator, has been recognized as the Unsung Hero for her tireless efforts behind the scenes. Silva’s dedication to organizing impactful events and connecting students with valuable alumni resources has been instrumental in enhancing the student experience at the School of Nursing. Her enthusiasm and willingness to go the extra mile make her an invaluable asset to the Carolina Nursing community.

“She helps put together amazing events and always has the best ideas about making the events as fun as possible. I work closely with her for the USGC Get Hired! Events and she has worked so hard to help me with these events and has provided students with so many connections from alumni. She is a great support for students and is always so happy and eager to help.”

Educational Support Award

Lonna Patel, Nurse Specialist, has received the Educational Support Award for her exceptional dedication to student success. As a clinical instructor and mentor, Patel has consistently provided unwavering support and encouragement to students throughout their educational journey. Her commitment to helping students develop into competent and confident nurses has made a profound difference in their professional growth.

“The awardee is an incredible instructor who is always willing to go above and beyond for her students. I have learned so much from her during my clinical rotation, and it’s her support specifically that has helped me feel more confident in my nursing skills. She’s incredibly smart, organized, kind and generous with her time.”
