Carolina Nursing faculty leverages AI to enhance student learning

Carolina Nursing faculty members Marlena Brokob, MSN, RN; Brandi Apple, PhD, RN, CNOR, CNE; Krystal Pendergraft-Horne, MSN, RN, FNP-C; and Lisa Woodley, PhD, RN, CNE, CHPN, introduced a Teaching Tip, featured in the Nurse Educator Journal, that highlights the innovative use of AI tools for the development of NCLEX (NGN) clinical judgment-style case studies.

Following the publication, they were invited to share their insights through a short podcast, which aired in July 2023. The success of the podcast led to the creation of an informative video, published in January 2024. Both the podcast and video explore how ChatGPT, an AI tool, can be employed to craft creative case studies. These case studies can then be seamlessly integrated into exam software programs such as Qualtrics, offering students a unique and interactive learning experience in preparation for their NCLEX exams.

Students expressed appreciation for the supportive yet challenging learning environment created by this teaching strategy, citing the valuable opportunity to refine their clinical judgment skills before high-stakes assessments. Faculty members reported that the approach not only provided students with opportunities to practice clinical judgment but also enhanced faculty efficiency and boosted overall student engagement.

Access to the video and podcast is available through a subscription, offering opportunity for educators and institutions to explore these new methods. The links are as follows:
